POST-OP INSTRUCTIONS FOR

BILATERAL MYRINGOTOMY WITH TUBE PLACEMENT

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT:

á      Mild pain in the ear and neck

á      Drainage from the ear for 48 hours.

HELPFUL HINTS:

á      Avoid getting water in the ear.  Be very careful while bathing.  You can put Vaseline on your ear and cover with a cotton ball to make a good seal when bathing.  No swimming!!  After you return to the office for your post operative check up, we will discuss ear plug options with you if you plan to go swimming.

á      Drainage from the ear a few days post surgery is normal, however this should subside after about  2 weeks. If you see drainage from the ears after that or there is an odor with drainage from the ears please call our office.

á      Place two drops of Floxin Otic in the ear canals twice each day for three days, then only use as needed, for example, ear discomfort, child pulling at ear or sticking fingers in ears.

á      If you have been prescribed an antibiotic (not everyone requires this), please take it according to the directions on the bottle and complete the amount given to you, even if you feel better before the medication is finished.

á      Tylenol may be used for pain.

á      You may resume normal activity level one day after surgery excluding getting ears wet.

á      As always, if you have any questions or problems, please call us at the office at (919)859-4744.

á      We will contact you the day after surgery to go over any questions you may have.

á      If you have any problems and need to be seen prior to your scheduled three-month follow-up appointment please do not hesitate to call.

At any time, if you have a true emergency, such as difficulty breathing or serious bleeding, call 911 or go to the emergency room.  Outside of office hours, if you have an urgent problem, identify it as such to the answering service, and we will get back in touch with you as quickly as possible.

It is important that the patient is examined three to six months after your tubes are inserted.
